Income inequality has grown in the last six decades and as of 2015 it has reached its highest level since the Great Depression, according to the latest statistics published by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.1 It has become a constant in recent conversation thanks to Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century, 2 the social justice encyclical by Pope Francis,3 and the heated 2016 Presidential race. What concerns me and many others in the education sector is the degree to which these increasing disparities are eroding education opportunities in the United States. All of us should be concerned about the impact this troubling trend is having on our schools, and the children and teachers in them.
