Understanding Academic Language and its Connection to School Success

Over the last few months, the i-Ready team has had a chance to talk to more than 100 district leaders about the challenges they face as they plan for the 2020–2021 school year. We explored their challenges, their reasons to be hopeful, and the tools they believe will be most important for success in the year ahead. While every leader we spoke with had unique stories and circumstances, there were remarkable commonalities in the challenges they described.

Establish a $5 billion annual matching grant to help states address unmet need and improve student outcomes. This “federal-state partnership” would reward states based on measures of affordability, tax effort, and productivity. States would be required to use these grant funds to reduce unmet need or improve outcomes among low- and middle-income students. 2. Increase mandatory Pell funding by $9 billion per year, with expanded eligibility for middle-income households and capped at the fourth income quartile. This would reduce unmet need for low- and middle-income students, making higher education more affordable and accessible.

Students can consult and learn independently, and teachers will guide students. • Live classroom- During live teaching, teachers ask questions to students and answer their questions in time, which breaks the regional restrictions.Recording and Broadcasting classroom- The school organized students of all majors, selects the existing teaching resources of the school, and establishes a Recording and Broadcasting classroom through WeLMS platform.

Project-based learning (PBL) is an inquiry-based approach that aims to engage students in challenging, active, and meaningful experiences connected to the world outside the classroom (Baines et al., 2021a). Project-based learning can improve student performance on traditional measures of academic achievement, build social and emotional learning skills, and engage students in deeper learning. This means focusing on higher-order think-ing and skills that will help students succeed in college, their future careers, and their lives as active members of their communities. The alignment of PBL and deeper learning is supported by a growing body of evidence that PBL has a significant positive impact on student learning and other outcomes of deeper learning (Duke et al., 2021; Deutscher et al., 2021; Krajcik et al., 2021; Saavedra et al., 2021). This paper will provide guidance for those who are designing curricula1 to achieve similar goals through project-based learning.

During periods of time when they can’t physically go to school, students might find it more difficult to (1) take care of themselves, (2) connect with each other, and (3) find sources of meaning and vitality—so these need to be the focus of online social-emotional learning. Students might find it more difficult to take care of themselves when they’ve lost their daily routines. They might get less exercise when they’re not walking or biking to school, or running around during PE. They might not be sleeping well due to altered schedules and added responsibilities at home.
