Testing waivers taken away from Ed Dept officials for 2020-21

education, education news | July 28, 2020

Jim Blew, assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Education, recently suggested states should not expect standardized testing waivers for the 2020-21 school year, Chalkbeat reports. Waivers from state testing requirements were previously offered during the spring due to coronavirus-related school closures. Merrie Najimy, president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, argues, however, that standardized testing in the upcoming school year will pull teachers away from providing for students' social-emotional needs, which have been emphasized during the closures. The sentiment is echoed by education leaders in other states who say the tests would take time and money from helping students heal and catch up on learning. Those who support reinstating standardized testing this year say assessments are critical to understand expanded inequities and where students stand after remote learning, arguing the data can inform policy decisions, guide teachers in their instruction, and help parents understand their children's performance.

More than ever, school and district leaders are increasing their focus on two goals related to student success: closing the academic achievement gap and making sure all K–12 students are equipped with the skills they need to be successful in college and in today’s competitive workforce. The metric for evaluating the most successful schools in the United States has shifted from an exclusive focus on graduation rates to assessing academic and global skill competencies. Students who master the new competencies and are prepared to face an uncertain future in the global information economy and society represent the new standard of success. They are what is known as “future ready.”

So we've compiled a list of some of our favourite apps to make study life that much easier. This thing is amazing. It’s an app that lets you block any site on all browsers for any period you like. You can adjust the settings to match your needs and goals. I keep it simple and just block Facebook for periods of 3 hours when I really need to get through study. This one is really similar to Self-Control, and has lots of added functionality and premium versions for those who will do anything to ‘not study’. Edrolo will actually test you on the subjects you’re learning, help you identify weaknesses, and train you to fix them. It’s like a personal tutor in your pocket.
