STEM in Early Education: Empowering Problem-Solving

There’s a digital teaching tool for nearly every aspect of a student’s academic learning. But what may go missing – and is just as important – is a child’s social and emotional learning (SEL), or whole-child education, which 93% of teachers surveyed want to focus on more. This growing movement teaches kids how to achieve goals, understand and manage emotions, build empathy, forge relationships, and make responsible decisions.

The library makerspace is emerging as a powerful vehicle for increasing library visibility and value to the student community. In this session, Michelle Luhtala, Library Department Chair, and Donna Burns, Technology Integrator, of New Canaan High School in Connecticut, feature how reorganization and materials selection helped one learning community fully embrace “making” across disciplines and grade levels.Participants can expect to learn strategies that will grow maker culture. This session is of particular benefit to K-12 librarians, teachers, and administrators, and is designed to empower educators to lead transformational learning through making regardless of where they are on the maker continuum.

This interactive six week online course will give educators opportunities to develop a mindfulness-based, self-care and relaxation practice and to learn how to use mindfulness practices to create more compassionate and thriving classroom and school environments.
