Designing Inclusive Classrooms

How can teachers integrate and accelerate literacy and subject-area learning in science, history, and English language arts?In today’s schools, every subject involves discipline-specific text, so all students need support to develop the critical literacy skills required to use and understand those texts.How can educators help diverse students participate successfully in the complex literacy practices required of the California State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards?To help secondary educators examine these types of questions, the Strategic Literacy Initiative is showcasing educators using their evidence-based Reading Apprenticeship framework, which is based on more than twenty years of experience researching and learning how teachers incorporate disciplinary literacy strategies in their classrooms.

According to Bresciani (2010), the “strategic plan represents the ideal of what the institutional leadership desires to achieve” (p. 39). Traditionally, however, strategic planning has often been viewed as an intimidating and difficult process leading to a document that may sit on a shelf (or be stored on a flash drive) and not be used in organizational decision-making processes.

The past 18 months have forced educators to navigate the tug-of-war between digital and physical learning solutions in the technological blink of an eye. Schools have since accelerated the adoption of cloud computing to deploy online learning tools affordably and sustainably, moving away from legacy and locally-hosted systems and services. Ambitions for ‘cloud eventually’ evolved almost overnight to ‘cloud now’. And just as the cloud empowers schools to expand beyond the classroom, the metaverse has emerged as a potential new space for making teaching and learning more engaging. So, does this herald the arrival of the ‘eduverse’?
