In the wake of coronavirus, the team here at Sparx worked tirelessly to create a maths learning solution that would help schools cope with the enormous challenge of remote teaching. In just six weeks, over 500 schools from 75 countries signed up to our Virtual Classroom. It’s just one example of how quickly schools have implemented technologies to support learning at home. And, importantly, this crisis has proven that it is personal, teacher-led learning that drives student engagement and success.

Using Google’s virtual reality tour creator, Google Maps Street View and VR headsets, students with disabilities were able to tour downtown Danvers at their own pace in preparation for a real-life walk around the area as part of a life skills class. It was a “low-stakes opportunity to practice critical life skills,” Jeff Liberman, the district’s technology director, tells The Hechinger Report. “VR allows students to go places and see things virtually without actually having to go there.” Beyond applications in assistive learning, the use of immersive technologies such as VR and augmented reality continues to grow in K–12 education.

With much of the country, if not the world working virtually from home now due to the coronavirus pandemic, we're learning a great deal about what technology is capable of. Employers who previously believed that employees needed to travel to potential clients to close deals are now seeing that these employees can accomplish the same task without the travel expenses. The pandemic is also teaching us is that virtual learning for students is more doable than we may have ever believed it to be.
