In America, one tool for economic mobility reigns supreme—education. The linear path from high school graduation, on to college and into the workforce is our answer to just about any question about upward mobility. But, it’s far from a sure bet. The standard high school diploma now offers 50 percent fewer opportunities for finding family-sustaining careers than it did 30 years ago. Even for college degree-holders, a path to the middle class is far from certain. About 40% of recent graduates are underemployed, working in jobs that do not require their level of training.
