The recent fiscal climate and massive funding cuts proposed in the education budgets have hit universities hard. Experts estimate that public university funding has been cut by as much as 20 to 30% over the past decade. Universities are forced to balance their dwindling budgets by reducing faculty and limiting course offerings – inadvertently reducing the quality of education they provide. Most state-run institutions look to source funding from tuition rather than Govt appropriations. The US has witnessed a 96 percent increase in per-student tuition revenue – shifting the burden from states collectively to students and parents individually.

Artificial Intelligence in Education landscape

Article | March 17, 2020

Some of us may have heard about Artificial Intelligence. This is a branch of computer science associated with the building of smart machines that can perform tasks that otherwise require human intelligence. AI endeavors to simulate human intelligence in machines so that they are able to think, perceive, learn, problem solve and even take decisions. Computer systems powered by deep learning and machine learning are able to carry out such tasks. This is achieved by bringing together thinking, perception and action using mathematical algorithms. In AI, each and every decision is now driven by data, where machine learning predicts human behavior based on accumulated data.

CoSN2020: Want to Boost Innovation in Education? Focus on Data

Article | March 18, 2020

With the right tools, educators can pinpoint subject areas where students struggle or skills that teachers need additional training to master. In operations, data can help administrators gauge the effectiveness of technology deployments and measure efficiency indicators such as use or spending. Those benefits are among the reasons why the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) highlighted data-driven practices as one of the top five accelerators in its recently released report, “Driving K–12 Innovation: 2020 Hurdles + Accelerators.” The rest of the list includes social-emotional learning, learners as creators, personalization and building the human capacity of leaders.
