Each year, the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative surveys the higher education community to determine key issues and opportunities in postsecondary teaching and learning. For 2019, more than 1400 community members voted and identified 15 issues that serve as “frameworks or focal points for discussion and programming throughout the coming year.”

A rural college launches a free in-home connectivity program

Even before the pandemic, Dr. Kyle Wagner, Northeastern Technical College (NETC) president, was a strong proponent of distance learning. Many of the residents in the rural South Carolina communities the school serves, where incomes fall below the national poverty level, don’t pursue a college education due to factors including lack of access to transportation and childcare. In schools, it could allow students conduct science experiments without science labs; in workplace training, new platforms like Mira could allow remote guidance when, for instance, engineers are working in the field. Seeing is Believing, a new report from PwC economists in the United Kingdom, says that AR and VR could deliver a $1.5 trillion (€1.4 trillion) boost to the global economy by 2030, including a $294 billion (269 billion) boost to global GDP by supporting education and training when it is not always practical or safe to do in the real world.
