2017 Education Research Highlights

Twelve studies that educators should know about, on everything from the benefits of mentors to the most effective studying strategies. Every year, we hope, researchers gain new insights into what works in the classroom—and what doesn’t. In 2017, a group of scientists made the case for why social and emotional learning is essential in schools. We learned that negative stereotypes can discourage students of color from going to college, and that a reflective writing exercise can help. We also learned that it’s OK for second graders to use their fingers to count, and that text messages sent to parents boost family engagement and student attendance.

The surge in e-learning for K–12 schools has also put a stronger spotlight on persistent issues of equity. In recently released guidance on e-learning, the Consortium for School Networking notes this critical question: “Does the district have an adequate supply of devices to support delivering online learning to students?” Many families lack computing devices and internet access. Kevin Werback, a professor and blockchain club mentor at the University of Pennsylvania, told Cointelegraph, “Even if they aren’t pursuing a career in the area, most students aren’t confident they can figure it out on their own. Blockchain is just so darn weird.” Weird it is, but employers are demanding more skilled Blockchain workers.
