A well-nourished student is more likely to succeed in school, and participation in the child nutrition programs ensures students have access to vital, health meals throughout the day. When schools take advantage of federal meal programs and maximize participation levels, both students and educators reap the benefits. Implementing breakfast after the bell and offering breakfast and lunch at no charge to all students through community eligibility are proven strategies used by schools to support children’s health and achievement. Participation in the summer and afterschool meals programs also combat hunger and improve nutrition while drawing children into educational and enrichment activities.
