Universal Technical Institute Offers Free Skilled Trades Training to High School Juniors

Universal Technical Institute (UTI), a division of Universal Technical Institute, Inc. and a leading workforce solutions provider of transportation, skilled trades and energy education programs, is bringing its "Summer Ignite" program back to help high school juniors make critical decisions about their post-secondary educational options.

The free, three-week program is the same introductory technician course taken by new UTI students. Once completed, participating high school students can test to earn course credit that can be applied if they enroll at UTI, lowering their cost of attendance.

"Our free Ignite program introduces a new generation of young students to a UTI education and the fulfilling career opportunities that await in the skilled trades," said UTI Division President Tracy Lorenz. "It's critical that we bring programs like this to our campuses, so that we can deliver the trained technicians our employer partners need. But it's also important that we provide prospective students with opportunities to fund their education."

UTI campuses also host high school students for competitions such as Skills USA and the Top Tech Challenge/Auto Tech Challenge, giving them a chance to win tuition grants. A total of over $710,000 in grants was awarded in 2022 through these competitions, which are held on an annual basis. High school seniors are also encouraged to apply for the "American Dream Grant." Participants can earn a grant up to $2,500, with a total of $475,000 available annually to 380 students maximum. Grant awards are based on how students do on a written test containing both academic and technical questions.

"It's encouraging to see growth in these competitions and in our 'Summer Ignite' program as we open students' eyes to the demand for skilled workers," continued Lorenz. "It's promising to see so many motivated, goal-driven young people willing to spend part of their summer taking our classes, learning new skills and getting a jumpstart on a technical education."

2U Partners with University of Surrey to Launch 15 Online Master's Degrees

Bridge2Rwanda Extends Partnership with IXL to Support Students Developing English Language Skills

IXL, the personalized learning platform used by 15 million students worldwide, has announced an extension of its partnership with Bridge2Rwanda (B2R), a nonprofit dedicated to creating global education opportunities for high-achieving African students. B2R educators will continue leveraging IXL's award-winning platform to deliver targeted English language arts (ELA) instruction, helping learners build and master literacy skills essential for securing university scholarships. In total, B2R has used IXL to support 500 students across eight different training programs since the partnership began. Despite encouraging improvements in literacy rates, limited access to resources and a nascent reading culture pose significant challenges to educational achievement in Rwanda. Recognizing the pivotal role education plays in enhancing socioeconomic outcomes, Bridge2Rwanda was established in 2007 to empower Rwandan high school students with high-quality reading and writing opportunities. B2R's ultimate goal is to build a thriving community of well-educated African leaders who will accelerate their nations' growth and improve the lives of others. B2R began using IXL Language Arts in 2019 to support the English language development of 30 high-achieving scholars from Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and Burundi.
