Bark Technologies | September 06, 2021
Online safety company Bark Technologies today announced the addition of Microsoft Teams to the list of platforms it monitors at schools nationwide. Bark is the latest company to offer this level of protection on the popular Teams platform.
Currently, Bark monitors more than 30 of today's most popular social media platforms and apps, as well as text messages, chats, emails, and Microsoft OneDrive files. Bark also monitors images, text within images, audio, and video that can be attached to Teams channels and chat messages as part of its suite of safety solutions. The addition of Teams monitoring in schools reinforces Bark's commitment to protecting more than 5.6 million children across the U.S.
Throughout the pandemic, Teams has been one of the most heavily relied-upon platforms for educational institutions, growing exponentially as schools switched to distance and hybrid learning. Even as students return to the classroom this fall, more than 230,000 educational institutions rely on Teams to communicate and collaborate online.
Using highly sophisticated AI, Bark detects and alerts families of concerning behaviors in a variety of categories, including cyberbullying, depression, suicidal ideation, violence, and online predation. Throughout the challenging months of 2020 — the hardest year for families in recent memory — Bark analyzed more than 2 billion online activities from teens and tweens across the U.S., noting a significant uptick in behaviors including self-harm and suicidal ideation. Kids faced a pandemic, social unrest, and virtual learning, and through it all, they relied heavily on online communication to stay connected with family and friends.
"With more than 100 million students currently using Microsoft Teams, there has never been a greater need to ensure their safety when communicating and collaborating on school platforms," said Brian Bason, CEO of Bark. "We are thrilled to add this extra layer of protection by adding Bark's monitoring services to Teams."
"We're happy to see companies like Bark joining the Microsoft Teams ecosystem and adding value by integrating their safety solutions with Teams Graph APIs," said
Yaron Hezroni, principal program manager for Teams Ecosystem at Microsoft. "The added safety measures Bark brings to Teams helps ensure that students are protected and in the best position to succeed."
Bark helps families manage and protect their children's digital lives. The award-winning service monitors 30+ of the most popular apps and social media platforms for signs of issues like cyberbullying, suicidal ideation, online predators, threats of violence, and more. Bark's web filtering and screen time management tools empower families to set healthy limits around the websites and apps their kids can access and when they can visit them.

The American Student Assistance (ASA) and the Association for Middle-Level Education (AMLE) have announced the release of Career Exploration in the Middle Grades: A Playbook for Educators. The digital playbook and its associated online resource center, the first of its type for middle schools, offer evidence-based best practices for effectively conducting career exploration with students aged 10-15. In addition, the playbook provides a beginning point for various career exploration programs, complete with implementation guidelines and case studies from schools throughout the country.
Many of the case studies featured in this playbook are from schools that participated in the ASA Middle School Career Exploration Grant program, the results of which were important in the creation of this playbook. The playbook's primary goal was usability, with practical and approachable resources that schools can use regardless of their current level of programming.

Engageli | October 20, 2021
Engageli, a virtual learning technology designed to enable superior experiences in higher education, today announced a strategic partnership with Macquarie University, an Australian university and one of the world’s leading academic institutions.
The partnership comes at a time when universities are shifting to remote learning as a result of the Covid-19 Delta variant. Macquarie University International College sought a compelling way to not only interact with students studying remotely offshore, but measure and understand class engagement. After teaching online through traditional video conferencing platforms, the team at Macquarie University International College ultimately chose Engageli, as the platform closely replicates the experience of a traditional face-to-face classroom. Engageli also offers increased flexibility for students and faculty in the midst of uncertainty and rapidly changing health and safety guidelines.
The pilot program with Macquarie University International College is the first in Australia to implement Engageli. The International College will leverage the virtual classroom technology through its pathway college with students at the diploma level from around the globe. Engageli’s unique features, including flexible table seating arrangements — designed to replicate, and even surpass, a traditional classroom — will foster engagement and peer-led learning, ensuring students interact throughout a class. In addition, embedded polling and note-taking, as well as Q&A and chat functions, will further drive quality learning outcomes.
“Engageli will be invaluable as we continue to strive to provide the best learning and teaching experiences for our students. We were drawn to Engageli’s fresh look that closely replicates the classroom experience, along with the built-in polling functionality and the ability for students to add screenshots of what the teacher is displaying to their personal notes. We were also keen to take advantage of the analytics and to be able to leverage this capability to incentivise student engagement.”
Dr. Pamela Humphreys, Director, Macquarie University International College and English Language Centre
Macquarie University International College will use the Engageli platform across a range of classes, including Critical Thinking and Introduction to Engineering. With this partnership, the College will be able to provide students in Australia and studying offshore online around the world with a range of learning environments that adapt to their individual needs — whether in-person or virtual.
“It has been incredibly rewarding to witness how Engageli is helping unlock new models and possibilities of learning for Macquarie University in the midst of the ongoing challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic. We believe that our continued collaboration with this world-leading university to create flexible learning environments will enhance education as a whole not just now, but in the future.”
