The Best Edtech for Students Is Backed by Research. Here’s What to Look For.

edsurge | February 06, 2020

In almost any school in the country today, you can find an app or program that claims to change education as we know it. Yet schools are littered with products that have not changed anything beyond teachers’ desktop screens. As researchers focusing on education technology, we see this often: interactive whiteboards covered in posters, desktop computers holding up plants, older devices that do not work with a newer assessment system. The list goes on. Our work at the nonprofit Education Development Center’s Center for Children and Technology focuses on how education technology can be used to support learning. The truth is edtech products that foster more learning than would happen in analogue settings can be difficult to find.

Visalia Unified School District Ensures Optimal Data Interoperability with Addition of Multiple PowerSchool Solutions

PowerSchool | February 17, 2022

PowerSchool, the leading provider of cloud-based software for K-12 education in North America, today announced that Visalia Unified School District (VUSD) in Tulare County, California, has added multiple PowerSchool solutions to drive enhanced educational outcomes. VUSD has added PowerSchool Unified Classroom® Performance Matters and PowerSchool Unified Insights as anchors in its robust tech stack after enjoying many years as a PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS) user. The district previously benefitted from implementing PowerSchool’s Unified Classroom® Schoology Learning toward the start of the pandemic. With the implementation of Performance Matters, Visalia will enhance its ability to create and distribute personalized assessments and monitor student performance. “Prior to Schoology Learning, we did not have a uniform LMS. With Performance Matters, we are able to have one assessment tool for the district and Unified Insights provides a robust data visualization tool,” said Andre Pecina, Administrator Curriculum and Instruction, Visalia Unified School District. “The value for us at the district-level is that the implementation team was a thought-partner for us. It was more than just checking off completed tasks, but also taking time to think through issues and provide additional questions and/or solutions." Performance Matters enables VUSD schools to build and deliver formative and comprehensive assessments. The results can be viewed alongside performance on third-party assessment, attendance, behavior, and even SEL survey data to ensure that instruction is specifically designed to address learning loss and accelerate learning gains. The PowerSchool SIS was a mainstay for VUSD, but it was not until the pandemic that Schoology Learning became the district’s main Learning Management System (LMS). In choosing an LMS, VUSD was looking for the ability to store and deliver training content, track participation, assign trainings, report activity and results, mobile access, strong support, and ease of use. Most importantly, the district wanted a platform to help keep students engaged and motivated. Since implementing Unified Insights, Visalia has been able to unify all district data, make data-informed decisions, and gain access to dashboards with reporting and analytics. “Visalia Unified School District has been a longtime PowerSchool customer that has more recently seen the value in combining our solutions for maximum impact. Leveraging multiple PowerSchool solutions with world class interoperability allows districts like VUSD to work smarter and truly reap the benefits of technology integrated to improve educational outcomes.” Maulik Datanwala, Chief Operating Officer, PowerSchool Visalia Unified School District is nestled close to the Sierra mountains in the heart of California's San Joaquin Valley. Established in 1885, VUSD serves 32,000 students, and employs 3,000 staff who provide educational services across 214 square miles. This includes 26 elementary schools, a newcomer language center, five middle schools, four high schools, adult education programs, and charters. EdCuration Announces Free Program for Educators to "Test Drive" Digital Curriculum Materials

EdCuration | August 09, 2021

EdCuration, the online marketplace for curriculum materials, today announced the launch of a free program for educators to pilot digital instructional resources. The EdCuration Certified EdTrustees Program pairs K-12 teachers and administrators with innovative, online courses of their choosing to pilot with students. "The pandemic drove a rapid switch to digital and remote learning, so educators are now wondering if they have the highest quality curriculum going forward," said EdCuration CEO Timeri Tolnay. "With EdCuration's Certified EdTrustees Program, we make it simple for educators to find, test, and evaluate the best instructional materials for their students and themselves before they commit to an important purchase." The curriculum resources available to educators in the Program include a wide range of K-12 core, supplemental and trending subjects, from computer science, history, math and STEM to creative arts, financial literacy, coding and social emotional learning, among others. Through the Program, educators will have direct impact on improving instructional materials and resources by providing feedback on what is working in today's online and hybrid-learning classrooms. At the end of each pilot, feedback about the curriculum resource will be shared with the curriculum developer and posted on EdCuration's website so that other educators can read the product reviews and use the information for future pilot and purchasing decisions. The Certified EdTrustees Program also will provide school and district administrators with a way to recognize their up-and-coming leaders and support their professional learning at no cost. Once their Program application is approved, educators will choose and complete at least two of four ExPLorations, EdCuration's short, professional-learning courses. Each video-based course can take from 45 minutes to one hour to complete and several have accompanying workbooks for additional subject practice. The micro professional-learning courses also provide educators with the opportunity for continuing education credit. Educators who are interested in piloting EdCuration's courses can apply to participate in the EdCuration EdTrustees Community. Each month the company hosts a community meetup to discuss high-quality instructional resources, career advancement, workplace experiences and other education issues. The first Community meetup will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2021. About EdCuration Founded in 2018, EdCuration simplifies the curriculum buying process by bringing educators and the best educational programs together in one collaborative, online marketplace.
