Tom’s mother was a teacher in New York Public Schools and he understands the importance of public education to a just, democratic, and prosperous society. He will fight against decades of underinvestment and inequities to ensure that every child has access to a world-class education that provides them with the skills to thrive — as participants in our democracy, society, and economy. Education has never been more important to an individual’s career prospects or our country’s economic growth than it is today.

International Culinary Center

In 1984, Dorothy Cann Hamilton founded The French Culinary Institute with a singular goal in mind: to provide superlative French culinary training in New York City in an immersive six-month program. Inspired by the technical school her father created and the premier vocational schools she visited in Europe, she accomplished what many deemed impossible. After 30 years, we are now the International Culinary Center. We count Jacques Pépin, André Soltner and Jacques Torres among our deans and our 15,000+ alumni include Wylie Dufresne, David Chang, Christina Tosi and Bobby Flay, who graduated in the very first class.

Using Google’s virtual reality tour creator, Google Maps Street View and VR headsets, students with disabilities were able to tour downtown Danvers at their own pace in preparation for a real-life walk around the area as part of a life skills class. It was a “low-stakes opportunity to practice critical life skills,” Jeff Liberman, the district’s technology director, tells The Hechinger Report. “VR allows students to go places and see things virtually without actually having to go there.” Beyond applications in assistive learning, the use of immersive technologies such as VR and augmented reality continues to grow in K–12 education.

Overcoming security and privacy concerns with e-learning

Few of us can argue that the internet and its connected technology has changed the global educational landscape for the better. More students than ever before now have access to a quality education, no matter where they live. Lesson plans can be tailored to meet the learning needs of individual students. At the postsecondary level, more than 15% of students were enrolled exclusively online in 2017. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, a further 33.1% took at least one online course. It’s important to note that those impressive numbers don’t include remote students at the elementary or high school level.
